First time in India 3G services are available. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has launched 3G enabled Mobile services for its Delhi Network only.
MTNL is a state owned telecom provider in the cities of Mumbai and Delhi. MTNL's 3G network is based on the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) technology one of the popular 3G technology used worldwide. The 3G network infrastructure in Delhi has been built with equipments from Motorola.
Initially, the coverage for 3G services would have core of Delhi covering Connaught Place, Sanchar Bhawan, Rajaji Marg, India Gate, Pragati Maidan, Delhi Gate and Minto Road.
The technical complexities of a 3G phone or handset depends on its need to roam onto legacy 2G networks. In the first countries, Ireland and India, there was no need to include roaming capabilities to older networks such as GSM, so 3G phones were small and lightweight.
