The spot for immersing the ashes of Gandhian icon Nirrmala Deshpande in Pakistan is yet to be decided, and nearly 200 peace activists and devotees of the apostle of peace will take a decision to this effect at a meeting here Friday.
Nirrmala Deshpande passed away in New Delhi last Thursday and as per her wish her ashes were divided into six lots, one each to be immersed in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, the places where she worked for her peace initiatives.
Two peace activists and members of the Pakistan-India People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy, Karamat Ali and B. M. Kutty brought her ashes to Karachi on Monday, but they are yet to decide where the ashes are to be immersed. They have to chose between four spots, namely Attock and Punjnad in Punjab and Sukkur and Kotri in Sindh, reportd the Daily Times.
Best known as a key player in the process of restoration of Indo-Pak peace, besides other peace missions in South Asian countries.
“We have invited 200 peace activists, Didi’s devotees and those who worked with her, as well as parliamentarians and politicians to attend this meeting, which has three points on the agenda, including deciding the point on the Indus River where the final rites will be performed,” the paper quoted Karamat Ali as saying.
“She was an institution in her self and worked a lot in different parts of Pakistan for peace and the participants of the meeting will draw up an outline of how to further her mission after her death,” added Ali.
He further said: “Didi’s ashes were brought to Pakistan to show her love for Pakistan, so we are inviting all friends to come together to continue her mission in Pakistan and we expect more than just those invited to attend.”
B. M. Kutty said: “We are thinking about Attock and Punjnad in Punjab and Sukkur and Kotri in Sindh, and the participants at the meeting will take the final decision.” (ANI)
