Health care reforms reaching milestone Health care reform moved a major step closer to reality Monday when the Senate voted before dawn to overcome a Republican filibuster against a sweeping $871 billion health care bill. The health care bill was passed by senate democrats in a climatic christmas eve that could define President Barack Obama's legacy and usher in near-universal medical coverage for the first time in the country's history. Obama's views: "By standing up to the special interests who prevented reform for decades and who are furiously lobbying against it now, the Senate has moved us closer to reform that makes a tremendous difference for families, for seniors, for businesses, and for the country as a whole," Obama told reporters at the White House. Advantages: By this policy 94% of the legal US residents will be insured by 2019 and significantly reduce the federal deficit, according to the Congressional Budget Office's estimates. The Senate's bill must still be merged with legislation passed by the House before Obama could sign a final bill in the new year. There are significant differences between the two measures but Democrats say they've come too far now to fail.

COPENHAGEN - President Obama may have improved his chances for passing global warming legislation in the Senate by forging an interim international agreement here that puts both rich and poor countries on a path to curtail greenhouse gas emissions. The Copenhagen Climate Accord was engineered by the US and BASIC countries, that is, Brazil, South Africa, India and China. Considering that despite being a major polluter the US has stayed out of UN negotiations on climate change and that emerging economies were not part of the policy-making process, it is good that climate talks have now become more inclusive. The negotiations ended on Friday with the conclusion that emission cuts will be open to international review. Obama still has much to do both to sell the Copenhagen Accord internationally and move climate legislation on Capitol Hill. Conservative Republicans and longtime industry opponents quickly savaged the agreement as a toothless failure. And many other moderates that Obama likely will need to pass a climate bill remained far from convinced the international deal has any merit. Even if the intentions are clear, a way towards achieving it is far more clear . What are the quantifiable targets for rich countries to reduce emissions? What is the time frame? How will the UN ensure that the promised $30 billion between 2010-2012 and the $100 billion a year from 2020 onwards as assistance from the rich to poor countries (announced by the US, not the UN) are deposited in the fund and disbursed equitably? The deal acknowledges that countries need to work towards limiting global temperatures but experts say that the accord has long way to go. We are more likely to see a rise in global temperature because the accord is not an implementation yet.

When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. The captain M.S.Dhoni and Suresh Raina showed their mettle as India amassed 301 for 7 in second one dayer against Sri Lanka at Jamtha, Nagpur on Friday.Dhoni, living a charmed life, registered his back to back century at Jamtha. Dhoni obliged his Sri Lankan counterpart who gave him two lifes in the same over-a missed catch and a messed up stumping-by reaching his fifty. With both Dhoni and Raina getting a measure of Sri Lankan bowling the former opted for the Batting Powerplay after the 40th over. The duo shifted into the top gear in the next 5 over and the period yielded exactly 50 runs. Ban on Dhoni: International Cricket Council’s Dhoni was also banned for two One-day Internationals against Sri Lanka in Nagpur for slow over rate. This was a huge blow to the home team's prospects in the ongoing five-match series. In the absence of Dhoni, dashing opener Virender Sehwag has been named the captain for the next two one-dayers in Cuttack on December 21 and Kolkata on December 24.
Reason for the ban on Dhoni: The thrilling second One-dayer ended about 45 minutes after the scheduled finish time because of frequent discussions between the Indian players during the closing stages of Sri Lanka's chase, prompting the International Cricket Council to impose the ban on the Indian captain. The decision to ban Dhoni was taken by match referee Jeff Crowe of New Zealand, considering the quantum of extra time the Indians took to complete their allotted overs.
Formal announcement awaited for the action: Formal announcement from the ICC is expected soon. It was still not known whether the two-match ban would come into effect immediately. Karthik as a replacement for Dhoni: Tamil Nadu wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik, who featured in India's Twenty20 squad against the Lankans, is likely to be inducted in the team as a replacement for the charismatic Dhoni.
Aftermath of deadly storm: A fierce storm, heavy snow and vicious winds in its wake made its way from America’s Midwest to the New England region. The storm created havoc conditions burying cars under huge drifts. Officials reported 16 inches of snow in Des Moines and nearly 19 inches just south of Madison, Wisconsin. Gusts of up to 50mph created snow drifts between eight and 15 feet high and even knocked down a two-storey Christmas tree in Champaign, Illinois.
Impact of the storm arriving just before Christmas: People are skeptical about the impact the storm would cause on the Christmas celebrations as the major storm is moving up the Atlantic coast on the last shopping weekend before Christmas. The stocking up of groceries and other staples happened on Friday after the national weather service issued winter storm warnings from the Carolinas to Rhode Island. Many Airlines have cancelled their flights on Saturday and Sunday.
Preventions being made before the snowfall: The heaviest snows are forecast for northern Virginia including Washington, DC to Baltimore and Philadelphia where 1 foot is likely and even 1 to 2 feet around Washington, DC.Maryland and Washington crews were prepping roads by spraying salt brine solution to prevent snow and ice from sticking.
